The Ohio-class submarine is currently America's largest submarine. The Navy ordered nine submarines from the company for $22billion, and has the option of building another. Block V, also known as the submarines, will be larger in both length and displacement than previous models. They would be the US's second-largest submarine if built to specification.
Ohio-class submarines
The US Navy’s Ohio-class submarines are among the largest military vessels. They are powered with steam turbines and pressure water reactors. They can travel at 25 knots and can reach depths of 800 feet. Electric Boat, Groton, Connecticut built the Ohio's hull.
The Ohio-class submarines can transport up to 154 Tomahawk Cruise missiles. Each Tomahawk cruise missile can reach 1,000 miles. They are also equipped with up to 66 special operations personnel. The forward-most missile tubes are easily converted into lock-out chambers.
Typhoon-class submarines
The US Navy is phasing out Typhoon class submarines. They were created to counter Soviet submarines during Cold War. The US built the Typhoon Class to match its nuclear-powered submarines. The overhaul is currently underway for the lead submarine, TK-208. It is unlikely that it will return to service. All other submarines in this class are also scheduled to be retired.
The Typhoon submarine is a multi-hull design. It includes two pressure vessels and five inner habitational hulls. There are 19 compartments total. The missile compartment is located in the bow at the top, between the pressure hulls. The submarine's sub-marine structure is composed of titanium, while its outer lighthull is made from steel.
Russian submarines
The Russian Navy has four submarines, the Borei class, in their fleet. There are 107 crew members on each submarine. They measure around a hundred seventy-three meters in length, 13 meters wide, and weigh in excess of 24,000 tons. The submarines are propelled using nuclear reactors. They also have advanced hulls to reduce noise. They can travel up to 25 knots underwater.
Russia has already begun building four sub-sea submarines. It will be equipped with Poseidon torpedoes which can be used to target coastal targets. Other countries will not build submarines as large as the Belgorod, but they will try to counter it by building bigger ones.
Block V Submarines
Block V submarines are considerably larger than older versions. Their length ranges from 377 feet up to 460ft. These new submarines are capable to carry up to 10000 tonnes and are second only in size to the Ohio class. Each of these submarines has eighty-three feet of vertical launch system (VLS) tubes and can deploy as many as 40 cruise missiles.
Block V submarines can also be equipped with acoustic Superiority Upgrades. These upgrades have been a top priority for the Navy when designing new submarines. According to a February 2022 report from the Congressional Research Service, there will be a 20% difference in the design of the new boats compared to Block IV boats.
