German Navy (Deutsche Marine) Type 212cd

The type 212cd submarine is the latest in Germany's fleet of advanced diesel-electric and hydrogen fuel cell "air independent propulsion" submarines. It can be powered by either diesel or AIP and is extremely silent, vibration-free, virtually undetectable.

First built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft for the German Navy, these boats are characterized by a high degree of stealthiness. These submarines are also considered one of the most advanced non-nuclear ones in the world. They can run on either diesel fuel or hydrogen fuel cells AIP, so they can cruise for up three weeks without having to surface.

These submarines have been designed to be extremely versatile. They can carry six 533mm diameter torpedo tubes and can fire various heavyweight 21-inch missiles, torpedos, or naval mines. Their unique "X” configuration allows them the ability to maneuver in shallow seas while still being capable of attacking surface ships and submarines.

The Type-039 was the basis of the original German Navy design for the type 212. It features a conning tower that rises forward and a stepped design to reduce the aircraft's acoustic signature. It had a double-decked manning arrangement. This was modified to make it more comfortable and allow for better weapon loading.

These improvements, however, were not enough for the Type-212A to be competitive with modern diesel-electric subs. German Navy decided to create a Type 212A “G” version of this type to reduce its acoustic signature. The design incorporates a much wider outer hull, which helps to reduce the boat's sonar signature.

Since its introduction into service in 2006, the Type 212A has evolved to become a more advanced and versatile submarine than its predecessors. In addition to more powerful and efficient weapons, the Type 212A has a more advanced command and control system, advanced communication systems, and greater reconnaissance capabilities.

Currently, six Type 212A submarines are in operation by the German Bundesmarine. These submarines offer a greater level of stealth and a more long-lasting operating life than other boats.

These submarines can transport 6 forward torpedo tube and have an "X" configuration that allows for them to be repositioned to fire either way. This provides unmatched shallow water maneuverability. They can also carry 21-inch heavy torpedos of heavy weight, as well as a variety or anti-ship missiles.

It is not known how many Type 212s German Navy will operate in future. However plans are underway to replace some of these older boats by newer models. Thyssenkrupp will build the Type 212CD submarine for the Norwegian and German Navys. It has a similar appearance as the 212A but has larger guns and more powerful weapons.

The 212CD submarines will arrive in 2023 and 20, respectively, to the German or Norwegian navies. After parliamentary approvals have been received in both countries, the Norwegian government and German government are expected sign the contract for construction.
